“What’s Trending In Home Design And Décor?” New Home Builder Connecticut Valley Homes Answers The Questions

The new Design Center at Connecticut Valley Homes in East Lyme is near completion, and our in-house Design Expert Amanda Anderson had to play the role of the client as she curated the selections for the build-out and product displays. To prepare, she looked back at recent client choices and looked forward at on-going and growing industry trends. We asked her a few questions about what’s trending in home design and décor.

What are some of the trends you are seeing more frequently in new homes?

We custom design homes for many clients who often say the same thing: they want a home they can live in, relax in, raise their family in. They want open floor plans combined with quiet spaces, like a spa-like bathroom with a destination tub or relaxing bedroom sanctuary. Outdoor living is also important and we build many homes with a three-season room or rooftop deck, especially along the coast.

What are some of the interior details?

It varies by homeowner, but we are still seeing requests for coffered ceilings in more formal rooms and shiplap in homes that are more coastal in style. And tile, lots of tile, in different applications.

Can you give us an example? 

Tile comes in so many unbelievable shapes, colors and patterns today. The tile backsplash has become the focal point in many kitchens we design and often runs from countertop to ceiling. Patterned tile looks especially dramatic with white cabinets, which continue to be the most popular selection.

Are white cabinets a go-forward trend?  

Most definitely. What’s changing though is the product it sits with. The “tuxedo” kitchen, for example, will introduce dramatic dark contrast either on the lower cabinets or the island. Or elements like windows with black exterior and interior. White quartz countertops are still a popular choice, but when white cabinets are paired with high-contrast patterned quartz or a countertop with dramatic veining, the look is both distinctive and timeless. A wood countertop, especially on the island is another selection our clients love. The visible grains add texture and warmth in crisp, clean white kitchens.

Is color important to new home buyers? 

As a coastal builder, blue is always on trend. But now we’re seeing it everywhere – in kitchen and bath cabinets, even the front door.
